Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions? I have answers.

What inspired you to pursue a PhD later in life?

I had spent many years in education, publishing, and literacy advocacy, shaping young minds and working in various roles. However, I wanted to challenge myself further and dive deeper into academic research. The opportunity to return to academia later in life allowed me to bring a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to the table.

How did you manage the transition from a career in education to being a PhD student?

The transition wasn’t easy at first. I had to adjust to a new academic environment, which was very different from my structured professional life. I created my own schedule, set clear research goals, and found a balance between my studies and other responsibilities. Having a strong support system, including my family, made a big difference.

What challenges did you face when you started your PhD as a mature student?

One of the biggest challenges was the shift in mindset. After years of being the expert, I suddenly found myself back as a student, which was humbling. Additionally, the academic tools and methods had evolved significantly since I last studied, so I had to relearn how to conduct research using digital tools and databases.

How do you balance your family and your PhD studies?

Balancing family life and my PhD journey requires careful planning and communication. My family have been incredibly supportive, and I make sure to involve them in my process. From helping me with research ideas to encouraging me during tough moments, they are an essential part of my success. I also set aside time for them, ensuring that my academic work doesn’t overwhelm my personal life.

What advice would you give to someone considering a PhD later in life?

I would say go for it! It’s never too late to pursue your passions and further your education. The journey will require self-discipline and resilience, but with the right mindset and support system, it’s absolutely achievable. Focus on your unique strengths and experiences, as they will enrich your academic journey.

How do you stay motivated throughout your PhD journey?

Staying motivated is a constant challenge, but setting small, achievable goals helps keep me on track. I also remind myself of my ultimate purpose for pursuing the PhD and lean on my support system when imposter syndrome creeps in. Celebrating small victories along the way keeps the momentum going.
